At the high end of film scanning resolutions, 4000dpi (dots per inch) ensures maximum image information for professional quality archival ready images. If you never plan to scan the same exposure again, this is the option for you.

Black & White negatives contain silver halide emulsion which means digital ICE cannot be used to remove dust and scratches at scan time. Even if your negatives are in pristine condition, they will still require Photoshop scratch removal to be perfect. Our Quick Scratch Removal process works great on smaller scratches. Deeper scratches that are visible to the naked eye requires a very time-consuming Photoshop Scratch removal which is available as an option.

For best results on 35mm B&W film, we recommend the Film Grain Removal and Quick Scratch Removal options.

Scanning Options

Film Grain RemovalFilm Grain Removal:
Both negative and slide film produces a natural grain effect, sometimes referred to as noise. XtremeScan use specialized software tools with advanced noise reduction algorithms to provide you the best possible grain removal, while keeping images sharp and clear with smoother looking colors. This option is a must have for all 35mm scanned images. Follow the link to see some examples... :

Image EnhancingImage Enhancing: Automatically adjust the brightness and color saturation when the film is scanned. This produces an image with optimal contrast and color depth adjustment. We recommend this option for all film types.:

Photoshop Scratch Removal:

16-Bit Color depth16-Bit Color depth: You may consider this advanced options for professional quality images where the highest color depth is required. Images are scanned at 16-bits per pixel sampling (as opposed to 8-bits). This option is useful if your printing device or service has the capability of printing 16-bit color images. The files resulting from this option are much larger than the standard 8-bit scan.:

TIFF ImageRaw TIFF Images: We will store the raw scanned images in TIFF format. This option is normally selected by professional photographers and produces much larger files. All image enhancements will be applied to JPEG copies of the scanned images which are included in this selection.:

Multi SamplingMulti Sampling: Modern transparency scanners have an electronic anomaly that can sometimes generate noise in deep shadows. This is normally not a cause for concern, but professional photographers may want to avoid the possibility of pixels being anything but the true color. Multi-Sample Scanning can minimize this affect by scanning each pixel numerous times, then averaging the resulting values to produce an image with significantly less noise in the darker areas. We offer the choice between 2, 4, 8, and 16 samples. Since each pixel must be analyzed as many times as the value indicated, it does take much longer than single-sample scanning. This option is recommended for high dynamic range transparencies and is usually unnecessary when scanning color negatives.:
